He played golf at Wake Forest University and won the Eisenhower Trophy with the United States team. Hoch turned professional in 1979. He had 11 PGA Tour Wins starting with the Quad Cities Open in 1980. Hoch won the USF&G Classic in 1982 and the Miller High Life QCO in 1984. He won the Las Vegas Invitational in 1989 and the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 1994. Hoch won the Greater Milwaukee Open in both 1995 and 1997.

He won the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in 1996 and the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic in 2001. He also finished 5th at the U.S. Open in 1993 and 2002 and 8th at The Open Championship in 2002. He won his first Champions Tour Event in 2007.
