Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has directed universities to permit all students, including those with outstanding fee arrears, to sit for their exams.

What did Ogamba direct universities?

Ogamba stated that approximately 51,628 students admitted to the university might be at risk of missing their exams due to their inability to pay their school fees.

To prevent this from happening, Ogamba issued a directive stating that no student should be denied the opportunity to sit for their exams or continuous assessment tests (CATs) because of outstanding fee arrears.

According to a report by People Daily, Ogamba explained that the Ministry of Education is currently addressing issues related to the funding model to help university students pay their fees.

"No student is supposed to be denied a chance to do exams because we are currently addressing this matter. As you have directed, we will issue that directive asking the university to do just like we did with the admission when we asked them to allow admission of all learners," Ogamba stated.

Ogamba made this statement after members of Parliament called for an overhaul of the new funding model.

The MPs also urged him to issue a circular to universities allowing students facing issues with the new funding model to take their exams.

Gov't instructs universities to admit all first-year students

Earlier, public universities were under the government's directive to admit all students offered places in institutions of higher learning.

The new funding model left prospective students and their parents in disarray, with concerns that extremely needy cases would miss out on reasonable funding.

However, in a communique addressed to vice-chancellors, the Ministry of Education directed all students to get admission regardless of their household capacity to pay fees and tuition.
