Elon Musk has recently launched the beta version of X TV, a new multimedia platform.

This move is part of Musk's broader vision to transform X into a comprehensive media platform, aiming to reduce users' reliance on external media players.

What are features of X TV?

Musk recently made the beta version of X TV public on social media, and with the integration with X, users will be able to watch films and live material right within the X app.

According to the app’s Google Play Store listing, X TV offers access to a wide range of live channels, including movies, music, news, sports and weather.

"Beta version of 𝕏 TV is out," Musk said on the X platform.

He further confirmed that,

"It's available on LG, Amazon Fire TV, and Google TV, with more integrations coming soon."

Reportedly, some of the app's key features include Replay TV, which allows users to replay up to 72 hours of shows; Startover TV, which lets viewers start live shows from the beginning if they join late; and Free Cloud DVR, which enables recording up to 100 hours of content at no extra cost.

Competition in TV streaming

YouTube has largely dominated the video streaming market in Kenya, but other platforms, such as TikTok, also account for a larger market, particularly with the 'TikTok Live' feature.

The X platform has gained popularity as a news-sharing tool as well as a civic engagement platform for Kenyans, with X-Spaces gaining recognition to the extent that the Kenyan President hosted an X space following the recent protests.

If the X TV platform achieves market success, it is bound to challenge YouTube and other platforms raking from advertisement streaming services, especially with the growing expenditure by Kenyan companies on digital advertising.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya Audience Measurement and Industry Trends Report for April-June 2024, Facebook and WhatsApp stood out as the top social media platforms in Kenya, with X coming behind TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.

Elon Musk's Starlink brings competition to Kenya

In other related news, Starlink has brought competition into the internet market in Kenya.

Starlink's entry into the Kenyan market has disrupted the telecommunications sector by offering high-speed internet packages at competitive prices.

The telecommunications sector in Kenya has been dominated by Safaricom, which recently reviewed internet speeds for each package in a bid to compete with Starlink, which offers unlimited broadband internet plans with speeds of up to 100Mbps.
