Evans Chirchir, a National Treasury employee who went missing on Friday, August 31, was found dead at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

A group of lawyers, alongside Chirchir's family members, had appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, September 3, to file a habeas corpus when they learnt of the mysterious death of their clients' relative.

What did family say about Chirchir's death?

The family, through the lawyers, said their last interaction with him was when he mentioned he was going out to meet friends last week.

Felix Kaeton, one of the family's lawyers, said Chirchir's friends had asked him to meet in Machakos, and it was after that meeting that the family lost contact with him.

"Before he died, some friends summoned him and told him they wanted to meet with him at Machakos. After that meeting, Evans Chirchir disappeared," Kaeton said.

The family further questioned whether Chirchir's death might be connected to his job at the National Treasury, specifically involving a KSh 268 million tender.

They added that the deceased had previously told his brother that his life was in danger due to the constant threats he kept getting over his life.

"We called on the state agencies to expedite their investigations. He was found dead, and the family members confirmed when they visited the Machakos Level 5 Hospital. But before that, there were issues related to threats to the life of Chirchir. He informed his brother. The question is, were the threats related to the tendering process?" Kaeton added.

The family said a postmortem will be performed on the deceased's body on Thursday, September 5.

How a police officer died over fake arms tender

Chirchir's death brings up memories of the demise of a state officer linked to a tender controversy. Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei was found dead in his rented house in Nairobi in February 2020.

Until his mysterious death, Kenei worked in the office of the then-deputy president William Ruto.

According to detectives, Kenei was killed by powerful figures who then covered up their plot to escape responsibility.

The officer seemed to stand in the way of his alleged killers, who were to benefit from the tender.
