Chennai - A family in Mayiladuthurai is in mourning after five of its members were killed in an accident in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 12, when a lorry collided with a car, resulting in the deaths of 56-year-old Mohammed Anwar, the driver Yasser Arafat-also a relative, two women, and a three-year-old baby.

According to the police, the victims were returning from Chennai, where they had visited a sick relative when their car was struck by a lorry travelling from Chidambaram to Cuddalore, as India Today reported.

The lorry lost control and crashed into their vehicle.

Emergency services, including the police and rescue teams, arrived at the scene and had to extract the bodies from the wreckage before transporting them to Chidambaram Government Hospital for post-mortem.

Daijiworld added that residents have reported frequent accidents in the area, attributing them to the absence of barriers, especially given the ongoing construction on the Villupuram Nagai National Highway.

A senior Cuddalore police officer noted that road discipline, particularly at night, is often neglected, exacerbated by a shortage of police and inadequate monitoring.

In other news, a liquefied petroleum gas tanker lost control and rammed into a 14-seater matatu belonging to Galaxy in the Mai Mahiu escarpment, Nakuru county.

One person died and several others sustained injuries. They were rushed back to Nairobi for urgent care.

The accident caused a traffic snarlup on the road, with police showing up later to document the scene.
