Njoka shared how a former boss at Kenya Television Network (KTN) cost him a life-changing opportunity with CNN’s prestigious Journalism Fellowship program.

The offer would have seen him travel to the United States on a five-year free visit visa, included in the fellowship deal.

However, that was not to be as his immediate supervisor at KTN played a direct role in derailing the opportunity.

Turner Studios, the organization managing the fellowship program, informed him that his boss had contacted them to cancel his trip.

“We have tried our best to discuss this and come to an agreement, but the response we received was rude, abrasive, and unbecoming," he recalled.

With all related documentation recalled, the move abruptly ended Njoka's hopes of participating in the program, leaving him devastated.

He shared his deep regret, explaining that he believed the fellowship would have significantly shaped his career, had it come to fruition.

“I lost such a huge opportunity which could have added a few miles to my career path," Njoka lamented.

He blamed the loss on humans being selfish and wishing the opportunity should have been theirs.

Njoka explained how difficult it was to accept what had happened, saying it was hard to forgive the manager who had shattered his dreams.

The opportunity had come during a time when his career was on the rise, and he suspected jealousy might have played a role in his manager’s actions.

“Everything was moving so fast, and I tried to suppress my excitement to avoid jinxing it," he continued.

Njoka recounted how his late mother, who had been more excited about the opportunity, was heartbroken when it fell through.

After learning about the cancellation, Njoka lied to his family to conceal the situation while struggling internally with the emotional toll.

He also shared how his manager ignored his attempts to seek answers, leaving him hanging for weeks.

“I was calling my 'bosses' to find out what was wrong. None of them responded, avoiding me for the next three weeks."

The most painful moment, he said, was witnessing his mother’s heartbreak, devastation, and humiliation.

Njoka may have lost his mother along the way, but he has something to smile about: He currently works with Wion Television in India.
