Governor Wamatang'i Directs Municipal Managers To Inspect Hospitals Daily: "Make It Your Business"

Kiambu - Governor Kimani Wamatangi has directed all municipal managers to supervise the daily operations of all 124 county hospitals and submit direct reports to his office.

The county boss said the move is aimed at enhancing service delivery in public health facilities across Kiambu.

Speaking during a meeting with top county officials, including sub-county heads and hospital managers, Wamatangi stressed that municipal managers must conduct daily inspections of hospitals.

He explained that these inspections are intended to identify challenges affecting service delivery and report them for immediate resolution.

"When you are the Municipal Manager in that Municipality, I expect that on a daily basis, that hospital, being a facility in your municipality, especially these large hospitals, our level 4 hospitals, that on a daily basis you make it your business to go there as the Municipal Manager.

See how service delivery is, what is happening, what the challenges are; where the problems lie. Liaise with the Medical Superintendent who is there. And where we can and should offer a solution, you report directly to us. When you find something major, report it," he directed.

Wamatangi explains Kiambu municipal mnagers' mandate

The governor underscored that hospitals should not become political arenas, cautioning municipal managers against using their visits to interfere with hospital operations.

He clarified that their role is to observe, assess, and provide feedback on administrative issues that can be quickly resolved.

"You can't go to give orders in a hospital. What you need to do is simply go and observe what is happening, liaise with the person in charge, and see if there are issues that are administrative and can be dealt with. So, for you Municipal Managers, I am making it a directive that every day, I want to hear a report. I don’t want to hear about problems in those facilities that could be resolved," he added.

Wamatangi further extended the directive to all county government projects, stating that the teams would also be responsible for monitoring development and socioeconomic programs at the grassroots level.

Wamatangi commits to fix Kiambu healthcare

Earlier, Wamatangi said the county also crossed to the 2024/2025 financial year without a pending bill for goods and services ordered by the county government.

This came after KEMSA Chief Operating Officer Dulacha Ejersa Waqo lauded the county for ending the 2023/2024 Financial Year without any outstanding bills for the supplies to its hospitals.

Wamatangitold TUKO.co.ke that in addition to clearing KEMSA debt, he intends to improve the county's health sector.
