Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah has said there are no plans to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as widely asserted.

What Ichung'wah said over Gachagua's impeachment

Speaking to the press on Saturday, September 21, Ichung'wah stated that no motion to institute the deputy president's ouster was in the precincts of parliament.

"As the leader of the majority, I can tell you there has never been any impeachment motion against the deputy president. That has been his creation and those that he walks around with. It is a sympathy-seeking gimmick to try and incite people from Mt Kenya, moreso against members of parliament," said Ichung'wah.

Ichung'wah, however, appreciated that MPs were at liberty to table an ouster motion against the deputy president if they were convinced his conduct had contravened the constitution.

He said it is in the place of the lawmakers to depose the president, his deputy or even Cabinet Secretaries on grounds of incompetence.

"No member has collected any signature to that effect. He probably might be calling for it...Imnpeachmenbt motions are part of our oversight of state officers, and the deputy president is not an exception, and so is the president. If any MP feels the president is not serving the people of Kenya or has contravened the constitution, they are at liberty to bring an impeachment motion and it will be considered on its own merit," said Ichung'wah.

Ichung'wah's pronouncement came after Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa revealed the plans to impeach Gachagua were active.

Didmus implied that Gachagua does not merit being the second in command due to his general conduct, and his supposed tribal and political bias.

When will Gachagua be impeached?

According to the lawmaker, Gachagua will be home by the end of this year.

He said the Gen Z protests months ago fired up the lawmakers to rid the country of leaders like Gachagua.

Didmus added that the deputy president was the orchestrator of his own woes by disparaging other leaders and preaching hate against them.

He further accused Gachagua of being a stumbling block to efforts by Western Kenya leaders to seek development from the national government.

Gachagua: Here is who will endorse my impeachment

In the meantime, Gachagua says his impeachment cannot be instituted without the approval of his boss, President William Ruto.

He revealed that such grave issues as the ouster of the deputy president must be a brainchild of the head of state.

According to him, as per the structure of the current regime, contentious legislation and issues with serious implications for the country must be canvassed in a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting convened by Ruto before the matter is taken to parliament.

He added that in the event the motion is tabled in the National Assembly, the president will still be the one to push it to fruition.
