Nominated senator Karen Nyamu took to social media to call out senators who were seen celebrating Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment.

Why was Kawira Mwangaza impeached?

On Wednesday, August 21, senators found Mwangaza guilty of all three charges leveled against her by the Meru County Assembly.

Some 26 senators voted during the voting to uphold the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted in favour of her impeachment, two against, 14 others abstained, and 27 senators upheld the charge of abuse of office.

How did Karen Nyamu respond?

Nyamu took to her social media platforms to express her disappointment with senators who celebrated Mwangaza's impeachment.

"I will never forget how some colleagues celebrated the Meru governor's impeachment tonight. Not that I don't support her impeachment, but celebrating?? I don't understand the hearts of people," she said.

She further argued that the grounds used to impeach Mwangaza were weak as the threshold was missed by far.

Nyamu seemed to imply that Mwangaza's inability to govern her own county led to frequent threats of impeachment.

"How are you not able to deal with your people. As governor, you were the senior most politician in Meru," she added.

High court suspends Mwangaza's impeachment

However, Mwangaza can now heave a sigh of relief as the High Court in Nairobi stayed the impeachment.

Mwangaza moved to the High Court to challenge the decision of the Senate plenary, which voted late Tuesday, August 20, to uphold her removal from office.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye suspended the Senate's resolution to affirm Mwangaza's ouster until the case is heard and resolved.
