Kawira Mwangaza: Governor's Impeachment Sparks Celebrations In Parts Of Meru County

Meru - Former governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached by a decisive vote from senators on all three charges brought against her.

Members of the County Assembly argued that, despite surviving impeachment attempts twice before, Mwangaza continued to misuse her office, grossly violate the Constitution and other laws, and engage in serious misconduct.

One major accusation against her, involved misleading the public by falsely claiming that KSh 86 million had been raised through Paybill number 247247, Account Number 0400163917899, following the murder of Daniel Muthiani, alias Sniper.

In reality, only KSh 286,516 had been collected, a misrepresentation that was deemed to violate the moral and ethical standards expected of state officers.

Meru residents celebrate Mwangaza's impeachment

Following the Senate's decision to remove her from office, several residents celebrated in the middle of the night, singing farewell songs and expressing their belief that she would now be held accountable for her alleged involvement in Sniper's death.

In another area, Meru residents gathered to watch the Senate proceedings.

When Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the Senate had upheld the impeachment, the group erupted in joyous celebration, revelling in what they saw as a significant victory.

How did senators vote to impeach Mwangaza?

For the first accusation against Mwangaza, related to gross misconduct and legal violations, 26 senators voted 'yes,' four voted 'no,' and 14 abstained.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators supported the 'yes' vote, two opposed, and 14 abstained.

Regarding the third charge of abuse of office, 27 senators voted 'yes,' one voted 'no,' and 14 did not cast a vote.
