Embattled Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza finally signed the county's budget estimates for the 2024/25 fiscal year on Friday, August 23.

The county's budget-making process had stalled in June due to an impasse between the Executive and the County Assembly.

Mwangaza suggested that her signature on the budget estimates connoted her dedication to continue serving the Meru constituents despite her woes at the hands of the ward representatives.

"In a pivotal advancement for Meru County’s growth, I have officially this afternoon signed the budget for the 2024-2025 Financial Year. #MbeuyaNgai #kaendekaendekabatikabati #KumiBilaBreak," she said.

Meru county's 2024/25 budget estimates

According to the Meru county financial strategy paper 2024, revenues for the 2024/25 fiscal year have been projected at KSh 13 billion, a 7.5% increase from the preceding period's KSh 12 billion.

The budget, according to the county treasury, will be funded through four main sources; equitable share, conditional allocations for loans and grants, and the county's own Source Revenue and Appropriation in Aid.

Mwangaza's signing of the budget estimates came days after she was removed from office by impeachment before the intervention of the High Court in Nairobi.

How senators sealed Kawira Mwangaza's fate

The Senate late Tuesday, August 23, voted to send the county boss home after being found guilty of three charges; abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violation of the Constitution.

The embattled county chief executive was impeached on August 8 when 49 out of 69 MCAs voted to oust her from office.

On the gross violation of the Constitution, 26 senators voted against the governor, with four of them striving to save her.

On gross misconduct, 26 senators voted to send Mwangaza home, two in her favour and 14 abstaining.

Twenty-seven senators found the governor guilty of abuse of office, with one senator voting against the charge and 14 abstaining.

How Nairobi court saved Kawira Mwangaza

She, however, got relief from the High Court in Nairobi, where she moved to challenge the impeachment.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye on Wednesday, August 21, suspended the Senate's resolution to impeach the county boss.

The court suspended the Senate resolution until the case is heard and determined.

Mwamuye further restrained Senate Speaker Amason Kingi from gazetting Mwangaza's impeachment.

The case was slated for mention on September 17.
