Siaya - National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah has dismissed claims of plans to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking in Siaya county on Saturday, September 21, Ichung'wah claimed the impeachment debate was Gachagua's own creation.

Is Gachagua inciting Mt Kenya residents?

According to Ichung'wah, Kenya Kwanza Alliance lawmakers have never planned to oust the second in command.

The Kikuyu MP claimed Gachagua has been using the impeachment narrative to incite Mt Kenya residents against their MPs.

"The impeachment motion is your own creation because you are the one constantly talking about it. The deputy president, having been an MP for only five years, may not have learnt much about what happens in parliament. As a leader of majority, I can tell Kenyans there has never been any impeachment plans against him. That has been his creation, along with those he walks around with. This is a sympathy-seeking gimmick to try to incite people from the Mount Kenya region against MPs," Ichung'wah said.

He also castigated Gachagua for seeking public sympathy after failing to champion the Kenya Kwanza agenda.

"Nobody, not even the president or his deputy should ever imagine they can intimidate MPs from doing their work they ought to do. Impeachment motions are part of our oversight of state officers, and the DP is no exception, so is the president,” the Kikuyu MP added.

How Gachagua linked his planned impeachment to Ruto

Meanwhile, the deputy president said his impeachment cannot be instituted without the approval of his boss, President William Ruto.

Gachagua revealed that such grave issues as the ouster of the deputy president must be a brainchild of the head of state.

According to him, as per the structure of the current regime, contentious legislation and issues with serious implications for the country must be canvassed in a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting convened by Ruto before the matter is taken to parliament.
