Nine people reportedly died on the spot as a result of the impact.

The bodies, that of the driver included, were booked into the St Vincent Mission Hospital morgue ahead of identification.

Three people, a child and two adults, survived the crash with critical injuries but of varied degrees and were admitted to the Muhoroni sub-county hospital.

Photos shared from the scene depicted a nasty bloodbath that no one would survive in ordinary circumstances.

The body of the PSV was crashed and its formation dismantled, only fragments of the seats being the only evidence that the wreckage was once a mover.

It was towed to the Kipsitet Police Station.

The police immediately launched a manhunt for the trailer driver, who fled the scene uninjured.

The bloodbath came days after another one in Tharaka Nithi county.

How 12 met tragic death in Tharaka Nithi

Twelve people died after being involved in an accident near the black spot Nithi Bridge.

Constituting the fatalities were two minors, the remainder being eight female and two male adults.

Confirming the tragedy, Tharaka Nithi police commander Zaccheus Ng'eno said the accident involved a Nairobi-bound hired private Toyota Hiace and a Toyota Hilux pickup driven toward Chogoria.

Ng'eno said the driver behind the Nairobi-bound vehicle, the Totoya Hiace, was not conversant with the terrain and road near the bridge.

It swerved off the lane to collide with the oncoming Hilux headed for Meru.

Two people survived the crash with critical injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Chogoria and Chuka.

The occupants of the ill-fated Toyota Hiace were headed for Nairobi after attending a friend's event in Meru.
