A 30-year-old painter, identified as A'bao, has succumbed to multiple organ failure after working an exhausting schedule of 104 days with only a single day of rest.

A’bao reportedly developed a severe lung infection that led to his death in June 2023, according to local media.

From February to May 2023, A’bao worked every single day, with only one break on April 6.

His health began to deteriorate rapidly after a brief sick leave on May 25 when he took a sick day off and spent that day resting at his dormitory.

On May 28, A’bao’s condition rapidly changed, and he was rushed to the hospital by his colleagues, where he was diagnosed with a pneumococcal infection and respiratory failure. He died on June 1.

A’bao’s family later sued his employer for gross negligence, arguing that the extreme working conditions contributed to his death.

How was A'bao's family compensated?

Initially, social security officials did not classify his passing as work-related, but the family maintained that the intense workload was a key factor in his declining health.

The company claimed that A’bao's working hours were reasonable, asserting that any extra work was voluntary.

They also attributed his death to pre-existing health issues and a delay in seeking medical treatment.

However, the Zhoushan Intermediate People’s Court found the employer 20% responsible for A’bao’s death.

The court ruled that the company's failure to comply with Chinese Labour Law, which limits daily work to eight hours and a maximum of 44 hours per week, contributed to his death.

The court awarded A’bao’s family KSh 8.1 million in compensation and an additional KSh 202,000 for emotional distress.

Woman dies in Saudi Arabia months after arrival

In another tragic end, a family from Baringo county was recently left in utter devastation and sorrow after discovering that their daughter, who went to Saudi two years ago, died just a few months after arrival.

Achieng travelled to the Middle Eastern country in June 2022 for what she thought would be an exciting opportunity to earn an income and improve her life and that of her family.

However, her family recently learnt that Eunice died under mysterious circumstances in October of the same year, which brought to an end their apprehension for their daughter's safety.

The deceased's mother told TUKO.co.ke that the last time the family spoke to Eunice was in August 2022, and she distressfully told them that her life was in danger.
