Nairobi - As the opening days of various educational institutions approach, parents are gearing up to take their children.

One topic always on their lips is school fees, and one parent took to social media to lament the skyrocketing fees.

Francis introduced himself as a boda boda rider from Migori county and opened up about his financial challenge.

He said his kid was called to the University of Nairobi, where they had visited to pick up some documents.

Francis's son scores A in 2023 KCSE

"My kid scored an A plain of 84 points in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and got a chance to come and study here. The biggest shock is the expenses, with the work I am doing. They require KSh 254,000. Surely, from my hustle, it looks like killing the student's dream," he said.

The dad of two appealed to the government to intervene and consider the parents with meagre salaries.

He said the money needed was too high, and he could not afford it even if the student joined the university.

Kenyans sympathise with Migori dad Francis

Several social media users could relate to the parent's pain, as they expressed in the comment section.

Justina Mbaabu:

"Please try looking for him, let us know what we can do, and advise him to appeal to the help office."

Mary Kiptoo:

"Ready to support."

Louis Shiku:

"The joy of an A grade is so sweet. Please advise further."

Joy Blessed:

"It is. Men are known to be strong. This man has resolved to seek help."

Grace Muthoni:

"But this parent belongs to the category the government said was a priority...the boda boda enterprise. Is this a ploy to ensure poor people remain poor?"

Nyams Mwangi:

"This model is not working. It's discriminatory, and they put us in classes. I am a parent of a continuing student. We were placed in band four last year. I don't know how they came up with that because I don't earn even half of KSh 120,000 monthly. It's crazy. We are suffering."

Babu Owino sympathises with parent over university fees

The parent shared a fee structure of the son's university and how much was to be paid in the two semesters.

Social media users headed to the comment section to express their views on the education system in Kenya and high university fees.
