A Nyandarua teacher has moved many Kenyans on TikTok after sharing a heartwrenching clip of a needy schoolboy who carried unpeeled and barely cooked potatoes to school for lunch.

Teacher Nicholas from Ndothua Primary School in Nyandarua shared that he noticed that the pupil had isolated himself from the rest of his classmates during lunchtime and was curious to know why.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the teacher said he was heartbroken after finding the boy having the meagre meal for lunch, adding he was embarrassed to join his peers because he was afraid of being ridiculed.

"I was so shocked to find the little boy having the unpeeled and uncooked potatoes. It broke my heart," he said.

The teacher said this incident happened a few weeks ago and only shared the viral video recently on his TikTok.

"When the clip went viral online, many people wanted to help out the boy, but he was no longer going to school. So I went looking for him in Kiambu county, where I found him a few days ago, with his mum, still traumatised from that incident," the teacher said.

Why did the boy carried unpeeled potatoes to school?

After locating him a few days ago, the teacher learnt that the boy lived in Nyandarua with a not-so-nice relative. On the day he carried the potatoes to school, he had finished his ugali the previous night.

"He told me that he was supposed to save some Ugali from dinner for lunch, but because he was hungry, he ended up eating all the Ugali. The next morning, the relative harshly asked him to carry the potatoes to school because he had not saved part of his dinner," the teacher said.

The boy obliged by scooping some small-sized potatoes and throwing them in hot water. Out of fear of being late to school, the boy did not manage to properly cook his meal.

"That is why he ended up in school with the barely cooked unpeeled potatoes and was ashamed that his classmates would mock him after finding out what he was having for lunch," he said.

The boy had to move back to Kiambu to live with his mum as the situation at the relative's home was unbearable.

"I found them after the video went viral as Kenyans on TikTok wanted to know the full story. Many have also sent them some cash, which I gave the mum when I met them," he added.
