A Nyeri family is devastated after the imprisonment of its five members, who were jailed for a combined sentence of 100 years.

Sixty-year-old John Ritho Kihoi, the family's patriarch, was jailed together with his three biological sons and a son-in-law after they were convicted of causing grievous harm.

"I was in the bar, accompanied by my son-in-law. I had some money after selling some onions and one of the men there requested I buy him a drink. I did so, and his wife also made the same request," Kihoi narrated.

The elderly man narrated that the man he bought a drink for was displeased with him for also buying his wife some beer, which was the source of their conflict, which escalated to a physical fight outside the bar.

"I remember him hurling a stone at me, but we were all drunk, so I cannot really remember everything that transpired that night."

100-year sentence

Kihoi said the man's wife tried reaching him the following morning, but he asked her to leave him alone due to the conflict that had erupted the previous night.

"However, a year after the incident, I was arrested. The complainant alleged that my sons and I beat him up that night and that is how we were all arrested. The judge found us guilty and we were jointly sentenced to 100 years in jail. That means each of us will spend 20 years in jail and will be released in 2037," he said.

The man insists that his sons are innocent and were not involved in the fight between him and the complainant.

"I tried telling the court that my sons were not even present but my plea was not heard," he painfully said.

The five men are in utter devastation as the women in their family are all alone with no one to protect or provide for them.

"I hope my wife stays strong and takes care of our children," one of the man's sons tearfully said.

Dominic Ngugi, who worked at the Chieni Supermarket, has been serving an eight-month sentence at a Nanyuki-based prison, which he said ruined his life and took everything from him.

Ngugi said his troubles started when he decided to help a customer carry two jerry cans of cooking oil.
