The Sacred Heart Kyeni Girls' Primary School has conducted a safety fire drill to ensure the children can cope if a fire breaks out in their school.

Where is Sacred Heart Primary School?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, teacher Edward said they decided to conduct the drill after the sad incident at Hillside Endarasaha Academy, also in Nyeri.

According to the youthful teacher, they taught the pupils from the school, which is located in Runyenjes, Embu county, how to handle themselves when a fire breaks out in the dining hall, dormitories, and classes.

"We wanted to create awareness of what should be done and to ensure the safety of the children. They were also taught to use fire extinguishers and the school has since invested in new ones to replace the old equipment," he said.
"We also taught them what they should not do in such instances, like hiding under the bed as one could get hurt during the fire. The exercise will be a recurring thing to prevent them from forgetting what they have been taught," he added.

According to Edward, the teacher will also be taught about fires in Technical Studies, which is a subject in their Juniour Secondary School section. The children in the lower primary section will be taught about fires in Home Science as well.

Woman recounts horrific scene at Hillside Endarasha

In another story, a woman shared how she was alarmed after learning that Hillside Endarasha Academy was on fire and rushed to help the fraternity deal with it.

According to the woman, there was a raging inferno, which was made worse because of the mattresses in the dorms.

She said that the darkness and the smoke inside the dorms made it difficult for many pupils to escape, and they sadly got burnt.
