She was referred to Nakuru Hospital in critical condition, where her husband struggled to secure her treatment.

"My husband spent a significant amount of money on my treatment since we received no assistance from others," she said.

Aziza who was returning from a funeral in Kakamega when the bus lost control and overturned said her family had to raise funds for her treatment as the Coast Bus management did not take responsibility for the accident.

Why is Lucy Aziza seeking help?

Now discharged but still experiencing neck pain, Aziza’s family is struggling to make ends meet.

Her situation is further complicated by her firstborn daughter's delivery and the critical condition of her elderly diabetic mother, whom she also cares for.

"I am everything to my family. My mother, who is diabetic, is in a very critical condition and cannot move. I cannot imagine how they would have coped if I had died in the accident. My daughter gave birth on Saturday, August 24, and I must endure my own pain to support both her and my mother," she emotionally explained.

Lucy Aziza's business stalls after accident

Before the accident, Aziza ran a small business that helped cover medical expenses for her mother.

However, her business has stalled due to her ongoing pain and recovery, leaving her reliant on the support of well-wishers. Aziza’s husband’s earnings are insufficient to meet their needs.

With the reopening of schools, the concerned mother fears she may not be able to send her Form One daughter to school due to a lack of funds for fees and other essential supplies.

"Finding food has become extremely difficult. Since returning from the hospital, friends and some well-wishers have been a great help, but our situation remains challenging. My small business, selling potatoes, has come to a halt, placing a heavy burden on my husband, who is a casual worker. My daughter is supposed to return to school soon, but I cannot afford her school supplies," said the concerned mother.

How Salgaa accident could have been stopped

Survivors have disclosed that the ill-fated bus had developed mechanical issues that were consistently ignored.

Lovin Ingati, who boarded the bus in Vihiga, reported that the vehicle passed through two police roadblocks without being stopped, despite showing clear signs of mechanical problems.

In Kericho, one passenger raised the issue with a police officer, who spoke with the driver but dismissed their concerns.

Ingati mentioned that they advised the driver to request a replacement bus from the company due to the vehicle's problems, but their concerns were not addressed.
