Nandi - Governor Stephen Sang has confirmed the dismissal of 1,800 workers as part of a human resource audit that unearthed an enormous and costly payroll.

The audit revealed that these workers were illegally employed, with their details improperly entered into the county payroll, violating Section 66 of the County Governments Act.

As a result, the payroll had ballooned to over 5,000 employees.

"There is no reverse on this. We must address the human resource issue. I will not selectively implement parts of the report; I am committed to executing the HR report 100 percent. We need to clean up this mess once and for all," the governor stated.

Sang noted that the issuance of termination letters has led to anger and fear among workers, some of whom have threatened to protest and disrupt county operations.

"Any individual who attempts to disrupt the functioning and operations of the county government will face the law and be dealt with as any criminal or offender of the law. If you have any issues, the options are clear," he remarked.

Despite the backlash, the governor remains resolute, stating that anyone involved in criminal acts or illegalities will face legal consequences and be held accountable.

He vowed that those doubting his commitment to enforcing the audit's findings would be proven wrong, emphasising that anyone who received money illegally would be required to pay it back.

“I want to assure the people of Nandi that by the end of this process, we will have a fully professional, efficient, responsive, and legally constituted public service to serve the people of Nandi,” Sang stated.

Why KCB Bank laid off 22 workers

In other news, KCB Bank laid off 22 workers and saw 26 others resign during a fraud investigation.

The bank reported a 70.5% reduction in successful fraud cases in 2023 compared to 2022, primarily due to internal and mobile banking-related fraud.

KCB attributed this decline to ongoing efforts to minimise fraud losses through constant review and enhancement of control standards.
