Tharaka Nithi - A sombre mood has settled over the Nithi Bridge area following a multi-vehicle accident along the Meru-Embu Road that claimed the lives of over 10 people.

The initial crash occurred at this notorious black spot and involved a miraa pick-up and a 14-seater matatu travelling from Meru to Nairobi.

What caused Nithi-Bridge accident?

The matatu lost its brakes, resulting in a head-on collision with the miraa pick-up, which was heading from Nairobi to Meru.

After this collision, the matatu lost control, veered off the road, and struck an oncoming Hilux pickup.

Shortly after, a Toyota Sienta, heading towards Mitheru and also experiencing brake failure, crashed into a stalled milk lorry at the scene.

Eyewitness comment on Nithi Bridge accident

According to an eyewitness, the impact was so devastating that bodies were strewn across the road, with both adults and children among the victims.

"From what I saw, about 12 bodies were lying on the road, including both adults and children," reported an eyewitness.

He further noted that the van was transporting a group returning from an event, indicating that many of the casualties were likely family members and friends

9-month-old baby dies in Kilifi-Malindi accident

In other news, a nine-month-old baby was confirmed dead after a tragic accident in the Matsangoni area along Kilifi-Malindi Highway.

Two of the 17 passengers injured in the accident were reported to be in critical condition and were receiving treatment at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

The police confirmed that the bus lost control, veered off the road, and overturned after a tyre burst. Authorities have confirmed that Buscar Company owns the bus.
