The debate kicked off with a focus on the economy, a topic Trump seemed comfortable with during the first 10 minutes.

However, many observers drew parallels between Trump and sitting President Joe Biden, noting the former president's apparent fatigue as the debate progressed.

Harris skillfully turned the conversation toward Trump's controversial decisions, highlighting his legal challenges and ongoing criminal trials.

She did not hesitate to bring up Trump's involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots, underscoring his rhetoric and actions during that period.

Harris also attacked Trump's Project 2025, a policy initiative that has raised concerns, questioning its alignment with some of his more contentious views.

Who won the 2024 US presidential debate?

Harris, a former prosecutor, dominated the debate by repeatedly getting under Trump's skin.

A poll conducted by CNN among 605 registered voters who watched the debate showed that 63% believed Harris was the standout performer, while 37% felt Trump made a stronger impression.

Renowned US pollster Nate Silver weighed in on the outcome, highlighting the widespread consensus favouring Harris.

"There is a strong consensus that Harris won the night. Bitcoin prices are down, which also implies a loss for Trump. Even the Fox News panel that I caught at the tail end of the evening seemed to concede that it was a win for Harris," Silver noted.

Kenyans react to the debate

Many Kenyans stayed up late into the night to witness the debate, with most agreeing that Harris had the upper hand.

Kenyans voiced their opinions on social media, with some criticising Trump for focusing too much on immigration rather than outlining his policies.

However, a section of Kenyan viewers defended Trump, accusing the debate moderators of being overly harsh on the former president.

Despite the divided opinions, the majority of Kenyans felt that Harris had outshined Trump, making a compelling case for her candidacy.

@THEDRSZ:

"Trump kept regurgitating the old lines about immigration. Kept diverting from the questions and answering his own things. He lost."

@pkibathi:

"Trump almost cried. Kamala brutally wiped the floor with him."

@ocalvinsteven:

"Kamala Harris asked for people's votes tonight. Donald Trump just assumed that people will vote for him. That's the difference."

What's the 19th Amendment and Women's Suffrage?

TUKO.co.ke reported that the 19th Amendment made it illegal to deny voting rights based on gender, granting women the right to vote.

First introduced in Congress in 1878, the 19th Amendment was finally approved in 1920 after numerous attempts.

President Woodrow Wilson, in office from 1913 to 1921, faced significant pressure from suffragists and is closely associated with the amendment.

The Women's Suffrage Movement, led by activists like Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul, played a pivotal role in the amendment's passage.
