Kiambu - Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with robberies in Juja and parts of Murang'a counties.

Simon Gitonga, famously known as 'the Axe Man', is suspected of being a mastermind in robberies in Murang'a and Kiambu.

"A man suspected to be the mastermind behind the spate of robberies that have rocked Juja in Kiambu County and parts of Murang’a County, has been arrested by detectives."
"Simon Gitonga, alias ‘The Axe Man’, was arrested following an operation by sleuths from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, augmented by a contingent of detectives from Imenti North and Murang’a County," DCI said in a statement.

A serious offender on the run

DCI also disclosed that Gitonga is known as a serious offender who has been running away from the grip of authorities.

"The 54-year-old man, who is a serial offender, has been on the run and has a warrant of arrest issued by the Thika law courts for his arrest," DCI said.

The crime busters said the suspect was armed with a well-sharpened machete.

A section of Murang'a county residents has complained that unknown men armed with axes have been raiding their homes and destroying property.

Murang'a police arrest notorious criminal

A man who has been terrorising residents of Mbiri has finally been arrested following a police operation.

Samuel Mwangi Maina, also known as the axe man, was apprehended on Thursday, August 17, in Kenol Town, Maragua.

Maina's victims alleged he would break window panes and cut off the grills with the axe to gain access into their homes.

Murang'a police commander David Kainga said once inside the house. The man would sprinkle petrol all over the place and threaten to burn down the home if they failed to cooperate.
