Bulletproof G Wagon: Inside KSh 30m Mercedes Uhuru Kenyatta Drove To Azimio Memorial

Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in style at the interdenominational memorial and prayer service by the Azimio La Umoja coalition.

The service was held on Friday, July 28, at the SKM Command Centre in Karen, Nairobi.

Footage captured at the function depicted the retired president alighting from a Mercedes Benz G Wagon and being welcomed by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.

However, unknown to many, the unassuming black SUV Uhuru enjoys driving was not just any other G- Wagon.

Uhuru’s vehicle is an armoured model, evident in the beefy, run-flat tyres and thick glass.

The base model of the vehicle is over KSh 15 million, but Uhuru’s is much more expensive.

The cost of turning the vehicle into a fortress on wheels is around KSh 15 million and could reach KSh 50 million.

The armouring process includes reinforcing the chassis to protect the undercarriage and installing bulletproof glass.

The vehicle’s frame, shock absorbers and even engine are modified to handle the added weight of armour.

An air filtration system can also be installed to protect from gas attacks.

In some instances, armoured vehicles feature smoke screens to reduce the visibility of pursuers.

Uhuru was previously spotted driving his G Wagon to Nyayo Stadium to inspect the progress of preparations for Daniel Moi's memorial service.

In March 2022, Uhuru went to Kenyatta Market in the SUV in an impromptu visit.

He was first spotted driving the vehicle years ago after an online video showed him buying groundnuts along Uhuru Highway.

He spoke to a couple of kids hawking groundnuts before giving them wads of notes.
