Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, are separating after being together for 18 years.

Justin Trudeau breaks up with wife

The prime minister announced on his Instagram account on Wednesday, saying the two made the decision to separate after a meaningful thought and difficult conversations.

“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy,” he wrote.

CNN reported that the prime minister's office, via a statement, said the ex-couple have signed a legal separation agreement

“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward," read part of the statement.

How Justin met Sophie

After spending several years teaching in Vancouver, Trudeau returned to Montreal in 2002 where he met Grégoire, according to the Canadian Prime Minister’s official biography

“In 2002, Justin returned home to Montréal, where he met Sophie Grégoire. They married in 2005 and are now the proud parents of Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien,” it wrote.

Bill Gates divorces wife

Elsewhere, another high profile personality who's divorce left people puzzled was billionaire Bill Gates who split with his wife after being married for 27 years.

Melinda did not ask for any spousal support and shared she will not be changing her second name.

Decisions about properties were in a separate filing, and it was believed Melinda will be getting half of Bill's wealth since there was no prenup.
