EACC Recommends Prosecution Of Charity Ngilu, Fernandez Barasa Over Corruption

• The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission recommended the prosecution of former Kitui governor Charity Ngilu and Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa
• The two politicians are accused of embezzlement, procurement fraud, and other economic crimes committed during their respective tenures
• The EACC also revealed an ongoing investigation into 21 current and former county governors suspected of corruption

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has recommended the prosecution of former Kitui governor Charity Ngilu and Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa over alleged corruption.

The anti-graft agency forwarded the names of Ngilu and Barasa to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions over embezzlement, procurement fraud, and other economic crimes.

According to a report by KTN News, the two governors are also facing accusations of conflict of interest, fraudulent pending bills and disregard of laws on financial management.

Further, the EACC also confirmed it is investigating 21 current and former county bosses suspected of graft.

Some of the sitting governors under investigation include Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki.

Ferdinand Waititu, Moses Lenolkulal, Mwangi wa Iria, Waithaka Mwangi, Okoth Obado, Mike Sonko, Evans Kidero, and Sospeter Ojaamong are the former governors under investigation.

Wycliffe Oparanya's arrest

A week ago, officers from the anti-corruption watchdog stormed the houses of former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya over suspected graft.

The EACC apprehended Oparanya and his two wives over alleged economic crimes committed during his reign as Kakamega county boss.

They were taken to the Integrity Centre for questioning over alleged procurement irregularities.

The officials raided the politician's homes with a search warrant.

"Oparanya, together with his wife, Madam Priscillah, are currently at the @EACCKenya offices at Integrity Centre. No information has been given as to why they have been arrested & why they are being questioned," ODM said.

Charity Ngilu visits Mudavadi

On Thursday, August 24, Ngilu reappeared in the public eye after a prolonged absence.

Ngilu called on Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at his offices in Nairobi, causing mixed reactions.

Mudavadi, while sharing his photo with Ngilu, reminisced about their long-time camaraderie, having both served in the previous editions of parliament until 2013 and also holding ministerial positions in the late Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki's regimes.

"It was great catching up with my long-time friend Charity Kaluki Ngilu at my office this afternoon," he said.
