Nairobi - Several families in Nairobi's Eastleigh and California areas are embroiled in vicious altercations over land ownership.

It is alleged that unscrupulous brokers working with public servants and businessmen continue to use dubious means to invalidate title deeds and process new ones, effectively evicting families from their homes and business premises.

In Eastleigh, a family sitting on a piece of land worth KSh 150 million for over 40 years is at a crossroads after a private developer unleashed goons on them.

Residents in the land claimed that the developer had been unleashing terror on them for a year now.

"We were born here. We have our children here. We know this is our home, do not know where they got their documents. We have been here for almost 40 years. We do not leave our houses because they send goons. We are living in fear," 38-year-old Anne Ndichu told Citizen TV.

Teresia Atieno said they do not have anywhere to go if they leave the land since they have been residing on the KSh 150 million land for years.

Same case in Calif

The case is no different in California, where a politician designed dubious ways to evict three families living in a KSh 250 million worth land.

Residents said the politician has been sending goons in the wee hours of the night to cause mayhem.

A resident, Nancy Njoki said the politician's handymen went to the extent of blocking the sewer system to make the plot inhabitable.

Njoki further disclosed that someone promised to give them KSh 30,000 each if they agreed to leave the building.

"There is someone who came and gave us KSh 30,000 each. If you accept to relocate they hand you the KSh 30,000, but if we tell him to come with the owner of the plot, he refuses. We have removed a sack of soil stacked in our sewage system," Njoki said.

The real estate business has been booming in the Eastleigh area, with skyscrapers sprouting daily in the populated area.

How Somalis are building Eastleigh's high-rise buildings

In recent years, Nairobi witnessed increasing real estate projects undertaken by Kenyans of Somali descent.

The epicentre of their investments is Eastleigh, and YouTuber Salah Mohamed has unravelled how they afford to pull it off.

Maurice Matheka, an engineer with the National Construction Authority, disclosed that Eastleigh is one of Nairobi’s fastest-growing areas.
