Hiring Manager Receives Praise For Writing 'Sweetest Rejection Letters' To Job Applicants

Ria Chopra, the editor of a Delhi-based organisation, is the sort of hiring manager every job or internship applicant wishes to meet, but many don't.

This is after she sent rejection letters that left unsuccessful candidates with smiles on their faces despite missing out on the positions.

Chopra was kind to applicants

It is the manner and tone and language Chopra used in the letters to let the 80 applicants know they were not selected that left many in awe.

In a tweet that has gone viral, the editor-in-chief of a creative startup called Stumble, disclosed that it was her first time writing rejection letter.

She appreciated the applicants' talent and effort before informing them that they had not made it to the selected list.

Chopra also shared the responses she received from the unsuccessful applicants, most of whom thanked her for sending them "the sweetest rejection letter ever."

Chopra made peace with rejections

Chopra explained that when you’re a freelance writer or a creative worker of any kind, receiving rejection letters becomes part and parcel of an individual.

According to her, turning creativity into a profession comes with a lot of ‘no’ and very little ‘yes’ until one either gains credibility or becomes famous and established.

"Having been on the other side not so long ago, I know how it feels when someone sends a very crude rejection letter," she said.

Chopra added that after countless unsuccessful attempts, she's made peace with rejection but has never learnt how to accept one that is badly done.

Crude rejection letters are demoralising

This is due to the fact that "rejection that is demoralising" and often brings the applicant down rather than build them up.

In most instances, the letter comes only after one sends multiple follow-ups after holding on to bits of hope, only to receive "a badly-typed email telling you no."

It is against this backdrop that she chose to do things differently when she found herself in a position of power at Stumble.

"I wrote rejection mails today that I think were also mails of encouragement. Mails of respect and mails of good vibes. Mails that are meant to keep you writing and creating," she tweeted.

She expressed that the rejection e-mails she wrote are an example of what she would have liked to receive if she was the one applying.

Consider consultancy as self-employment

Elsewhere, Dr Timothy Mumo, a renowned resume and career consultant, encouraged unemployed graduates to consider venturing into consultancy in their fields of expertise.

Mumo, who holds a degree in Microbiology from the University of Kabianga, shared his own journey from being a job seeker to a successful consultant.

As a graduate with a background in Microbiology, he had hoped to pursue a career in scientific research and diagnostics.

However, after sending out over 500 job applications and only receiving one response to work in a customer service company, he decided to get into consultancy.
