Kajiado Farmer Rakes In Over KSh 30k Weekly From Rabbit Urine

Consolata Atuti started rearing rabbits out of curiosity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She started with three rabbits (three does and one buck) purchased at KSh 4,500. Six months later, the number had grown to over 40.

As time passed, she realised she could commercialise the animal's products as the business was lucrative.

“I started rabbit keeping around August 2020 with one male and two females. Within that period of around six months, I now have almost 40 rabbits, not counting the ones that have died and the ones I have eaten,” she told CityBiz.

How much rabbit urine costs in Kenya

Initially, the Kiserian farmer kept rabbits for their meat but discovered its urine had benefits, Who Owns Kenya reported.

She revealed that its urine can be used as fertiliser and pesticide as it is rich in nitrogen.

“I harvest 150 litres of rabbit urine per week for organic fertiliser production, which translates to an average of KSh 30,000 per week,” she disclosed.

She noted that a litre of rabbit urine goes for KSh 250.

How to use rabbit urine

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Vincent Isambo, an agricultural consultant, explained that a litre of urine is enough to be used as fertiliser in a quarter acre of land.

Isambo said a litre of rabbit urine is mixed with five litres of water and sprayed at the base of the stem.

"Rabbit urine repels pests. In this, two litres of urine is mixed with three litres of water. The smell prevents pests like aphids from attacking plants," he expounded.

What Nakuru farmer makes from rabbit urine

In Nakuru, James Mureithi revealed rabbit farming earns him up to KSh 100,000 in a good month.

The middle-aged farmer revealed that he started rearing rabbits in 2016 because he needed urine for his farm.

He decided to commercialise the project as it grew.

“I’ve been doing rabbit farming since 2016, but I was not doing it commercially. I was doing rabbit farming because I needed to have some urine for my farm, but later the project enlarged, and I turned it to commercial farming,” Mureithi told TUKO.co.ke.

Meru graduate earns KSh 8k daily from dairy

In other news, Meru farmer Gordon Chui revealed he milks 155 to 175 litres daily.

The Chuka University graduate decided not to look for a job as he was passionate about farming, having started keeping dairy cows in 2015.

The former pig farmer who has employed one worker sells his produce to Brookside Dairies, Mt Kenya Milk and Meru Central Dairy.
