Kenyan comedian Sheila Ajjie has catapulted herself from an unassuming online presence to the glamorous world of Hollywood.

Sheila Ajjie hopes for Hollywood

With her unique blend of humour and relatable storytelling, she has not only captured the hearts of audiences but has also found herself rubbing shoulders with the likes of Michael B. Jordan and Viola Davis.

Ajjie's comedic career was as unexpected as it was delightful. As the COVID-19 pandemic confined millions to their homes, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, stumbling upon her innate talent for humour and storytelling.

"I got into comedy in March of 2020. I am like everyone else who discovered new things about themselves during the pandemic. I knew I was funny personally, like when I cracked jokes to myself in my head, but I didn’t think other people would find me funny," she said in an interview with TUKO.co.ke.

From sharing witty anecdotes on platforms like Twitter and TikTok, she soon found herself at the forefront of the Kenyan comedy scene.

Sheila Ajjie's big comedy break

Her video about the curious way Kenyans groove to gospel tunes in nightclubs, only to switch to hymns in church the next day, launched her into the comedic stratosphere.

"I posted videos about my dating life and my life as a Kenyan. Then one day I posted a video about how Kenyans dance to gospel songs in the club and sing the same songs in church literally the next morning. That’s the video that blew up and started the comedy journey for me," Ajjie noted.

Beyond her comedic prowess, Sheila harbours dreams of gracing the silver screen, particularly envisioning herself as the African Barbie in a potential sequel.

Actuarial scientist

Intriguingly, Sheila's journey takes an unexpected detour through the realm of actuarial science, an academic path that starkly contrasts her comedic inclinations.

However, the zenith of Sheila's voyage came when she found herself face-to-face with Hollywood legends.

A seemingly innocuous email invitation unravelled into an unforgettable meeting with her self-proclaimed "husband," Michael B. Jordan.

The encounter, she says, shattered her shyness and led to lasting connections with celebrities.

Pursuing her passion with unwavering determination, Sheila secured a scholarship to the prestigious USC graduate film and media school, which whisked her away to the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles.

"I got a scholarship to go to graduate film and media school at USC, and that was all it was. Luckily, I moved to a city (Los Angeles) which is also really good for my development as a content creator, comedian and actor, so I have been able to tap into several opportunities that transcend my education," she said.

As Sheila sets her sights on the horizon, her ambitions are as expansive as her comedic range. Beyond personal success, she envisions a future where African talent is not only recognised but celebrated on a global stage.

With dreams of performing stand-up comedy, acting in comedic roles, and contributing her penmanship to the genre, she's equally determined to pave the way for African creatives in Hollywood.

By cultivating connections and sharing her journey, Sheila aims to dismantle barriers and create pathways for fellow African artists.

Ajjie said:

" I really want to get into performing stand-up comedy, I want to act comedy, and I want to write comedy. I would love to help bridge the gap between creatives in Africa, specifically Kenya and in Hollywood. I would love for people and companies in Hollywood to consider talent from Africa for roles in movies and TV, for advertising campaigns, for literally anything."

Sheila remains resolute in her commitment to her roots affirming that, no matter where her career takes her.

Edi Gathegi lands new Hollywood role

In July, Kenyan superstar Edi Gathegi made fellow countrymen proud after he landed a new in DC's upcoming film Superman Legacy.

The high-flying TV star will play Mister Terrific, a superhero ever ready to save the day from villains.

Gathegi announced the news on his Instagram account, posting a black and white photo of himself, side by side with that of Mr Terrific.

"Beyond grateful a master storyteller has invited me to contribute to this iconic property and this artistic conversation. Humbled to join the DC family," Gathegi wrote.

Sinema Focus reported that Gathegi will join Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet, who will play The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and The Politician, respectively.
