"I got a supplementary in the exams and decided to taste because life was unfair."

Kamau then got involved in student politics at the Technical University of Kenya before finishing his degree, but he never got an internship.

The graduate did not sit back and wallow in misery as he started selling onions.

“I went to Tanzania to grow onions to make it in life.”

Kamau enrolled for German classes at the Goethe Institute as he had pursued the language in high school.

“I did many side hustles to support my German classes, hoping to one day move abroad for work.”

He then applied for a volunteer social year in Germany, which allows young people to work in the social sector, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

“DHL surprised me, but I thought it was a joke.”

Kamau went to the German embassy and got a visa before flying abroad.

“I bid Kenya goodbye. This is the day my parents knew. Nobody knew till the day I booked my flight.”

Kamau shared photos of his life abroad, where he learned to drive and travelled across Europe. He visited Austria, Switzerland, France and Finland.

TikTokers reacted by saying:

_chari_:

“I’ve realised life is smoother without dating.”

Cynthiamburu:

“Your story has really encouraged me.”

Jasmine Lerato:

“Very inspiring. Congratulations.”
