Over 100,000 pairs of children's jeans have been recalled from the United States of America markets over safety concerns

Kenyan exports to US market

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) the 100,000 pairs of jeans meant for babies made in Kenya had been recalled from the market because of faulty features that could pose risks to toddlers.

The recalled jeans are Dustbowl Wash style Number 3022341, vendor number 7000541, and Telford style number 3022342 and vendor number 7000541.

"Consumers should immediately take the recalled jeans away from children and return the jeans to any The Children’s Place store for a full refund. The Children’s Place is notifying all known purchasers," CPSC said in a public statement.

The two styles of clothes were selling in the US and Canadian markets from September 2022 to June 2023.

Why were Kenyan jeans recalled?

At least 97,400 pairs of jeans had been sold in the US market, and another 1,800 sold in the Canadian market, according to the CPSC.

The recall comes after the agency received one report of snaps detaching from the jeans though no injury was reported.

Market price for the jeans was KSh 3600, at least 25 US dollars. Those asked to return them have been cleared to demand a full refund of their money.

The August 10, 2023 recall indicated that the metal snaps on the jeans could detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Consumer safety in the US

The Children’s Place, of Secaucus, New Jersey was the importer of the clothes manufactured in Kenya.

Such textiles are usually manufactured and exported by companies at the Export Processing Zones in Athi River, Machakos county.

TUKO.co.ke established that CPSC's mandate is protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death associated with the use of consumer products.

The US indicated that deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost it over US dollars 1 trillion.
