Kiambu - A wedding has been called off after six guests died following a tragic incident at a compound in the Kihunguro area, Ruiru.

A child and five women were the casualties after a concrete wet slab they were standing on collapsed.

They were singing and dancing on top of the well that is in the bride's compound when tragedy struck.

According to a police report by Kiambu Police Commander Perminus Kioi, the concrete covering the well collapsed under the pressure exerted by the weight of the individuals.

The police boss said out of the 17 who fell into the well, 11 people were retrieved and taken to Ruiru Hospital.

"The concrete covering of the water tank collapsed due to the weight of the said persons, and the six drowned. Rescue operations were mobilised, and 11 people were retrieved, including two children who were taken to Ruiru hospital," he said.

What's Kiambu county's response

Confirming the tragedy, Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi said a rescue mission was underway.

The county chief shared his condolence message with the families who had lost their loved ones in the Saturday, August 19 incident.

"An underground tank has caved in at Kihunguro near the Administration Police Post in Ruiru Sub-County. Friends and family were celebrating a wedding when the tank caved in with about 30 people.
Several of them have been rescued through the effort of the County government of Kiambu fire brigade and community members. The rescue mission is continuing. We feel sorry for the families who were impacted and wish quick recovery to the victims," read the statement.

Groom fatally shot during wedding

On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, TUKO.co.ke reported that a woman was widowed after her husband was shot dead moments after her wedding.

Marco Antonio Rosales Contreas was shot dead by a gunman who fled the scene in what was reported to be cartel wars.

New York Post reported that the groom had just said "I do" to his lover, promising her that only death would separate them apart before the gunman killed him.

Contreas's death on his wedding day was cited as a case of mistaken identity as cartels battle for control in Mexico.
