Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has promised to treat his followers to some mobile money after Safaricom raised the daily limit to KSh 500,000.

On Monday, August 14, the telco announced that the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) had approved the request to increase the daily account limit to KSh 500,000, up from KSh 300,000.

Reacting to this news which caused a debate on social media, Sonko said he finally has a chance to send his fans some money as he enjoys news of the new limit from Safaricom.

"Good news to watu wangu. Safaricom has received the CBK's approval to increase M-Pesa Account and daily transaction limits to Kes 500k, effective 15th August 2023," he said on Instagram.

"I can now M-Pesa watu wangu something and enjoy the new Mpesa services," he added.

As soon as he made the post, Kenyans trooped to the comment section, giving out their numbers to Sonko, hoping for the promised M-Pesa message.

Safaricom raises daily limit

As reported, mobile money account limits for M-Pesa users were initially capped at a maximum of KSh 300,000 per day, limiting several users who desired to transact with more daily amounts.

The new development comes following an approval by the Central Bank of Kenya that was made public on Monday, August 14.

"Starting Tuesday 15th August 2023, all M-PESA customers will enjoy increased daily transaction limits and increased account limits of KSh 500,000 following approval from the @CBKKenya," tweeted Safaricom," he said.

According to Safaricom, the increased limits will provide customers and businesses with even more convenience and safety when transacting.

Sonko sends his fans money

A few months ago, Sonko was in Mombasa on a personal visit when supporters met him.

The former county chief was accosted by supporters who demanded a handout from.

Famed for his generosity, Sonko told the youths that he was feeling the tough economic times, but he would get a loan to give them some money to share.

"The little lunch from my pocket I will give you. I will take a fuliza lone; I'm not okay. Let me show you)," said Sonko as he reached out for his phone.
