As fellow business owners rummaged through their shops to assess the damage, the unnamed woman was counting her blessings.

"Nilikuwa nimeziweka hapa. Sasa vile walifungua, walisongeza hii mbao na kuzifunikia zaidi so hazikuonekana" (The cash was here. When they broke in, they moved this wooden panel essentially hiding the money even more), she said with tears in her eyes.

The unexpected discovery left the agent, as well as witnesses around the shop, in a state of astonishment and gratitude.

Members of public angry at police

In the wake of the unfortunate incident, members of the public expressed their disappointment at the laxity witnessed by security officers in the area.

The Ngong market traders urged the management to beef up security to prevent a repeat of the theft, adding that insecurity had become rampant in the area.

Mary Chesire:

"Ngong is becoming very insecure. Thugs are on the run breaking homes and businesses. Hopefully, the police will up their game and restore security."

Brian Muiruri

"They should investigate and charge them all. Our mothers are struggling to bring food on the table and this is happening."

As the M-Pesa lady thanked God for saving the money, eyewitnesses advised her to give tithe to the church as a show of gratitude.

She is hopeful that the culprits will be brought to justice even as she continues to hold onto the positive outcome of the situation.

M-Pesa fraud on the rise

Cases of M-Pesa agents losing money to fraudsters have been rampant in Kenya in recent years both in towns and the rural areas.

In once incident, Allan Lwala revealed that he lost a float of KSh 88,000 after a conman posing as a customer visited his shop in Nyalenda, Kisumu.

Given the rise in the number of thefts, Kenyans have been advised to separately use the M-Pesa line to only perform M-Pesa tasks.
