The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has made major changes in its management as it works towards efficiently playing its part towards attaining Universal Health Coverage.

NHIF management changes

In a circular of Monday, August 28, seen by TUKO.co.ke, the changes have seen the realignment and rotation of NHIF branch managers.

According to the organisation, the rotation is a standard procedure it conducts every three years in line with its human resource policy.

"The exercise is part of a change management process and a developmental strategy to afford the employees broad exposure to the entire functions of the organisation and different aspects of specific functions," reads the circular.

The new changes are expected to enhance the coordination of NHIF's operations across the country.

With these essential changes, the Fund is determined to enhance its commitment to transparency, accountability, integrity, and ethical practices that are key in mitigating risks and helping it stay afloat as far as business is concerned.

"We're restructuring to reduce risk and prioritize core tasks. Field managers will take on new regions and branches to bring fresh ideas and diverse problem-solving approaches.
"The reshuffle will promote skill-sharing and equip our team to tackle new challenges in their new assignments. We're committed to delivering the best possible results to be more effective and innovative," explained Michael Kamau, NHIF Board Chairman.

Kamau added that restructuring the human resource was basic in the transformation of NHIF as it gears itself to become and efficient and most reliable purchaser of healthcare services and help attain UHC goals.

So far, the NHIF network covers all 47 counties in Kenya, with the organisation organised into eight regions with 70 operational branch offices.

"Each area is overseen by a dedicated regional manager supervising a cluster of 7 to 13 branch offices. The NHIF Board assures the public that all changes will be structured to minimise disruption to the fund's operations and ensure smooth delivery of services," Kmau added.

In June 2023, President William Ruto stated that he wanted employed Kenyans to be deducted 2.75% of their salaries as NHIF contributions to cushion those without income.
