Saboti MP Caleb Luyai Amisi has defended Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Party leader Raila Odinga's struggle for a better Kenya, saying he should not be questioned if he chooses to step down from the active struggle.

Caleb Amisi hosts Raila Odinga during daughter's birthday party

Amisi who is serving his second successive term through Raila's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) recently hosted a massive birthday party for his daughter and invited the Opposition leader to his home for the event.

In a tweet that got Kenyans online arguing, Amisi said that Raila should not be criticised and accused of abandoning the struggle for a better Kenya if he chooses to.

He was subtly responding to a section of politicians accusing Raila of abandoning the struggle against the cost of living and instead seeking a share of power in President William Ruto's administration.

"If you think Raila has abandoned the cost of living and only interested in power sharing, just go to the street yourself and fight for cost of living.

How long was Raila Odinga was jailed?

"You expect Raila to die for you, get imprisoned for over six years, fight for multipartyism and the new constitution ,fight for devolution and reforms since you were in diapers and now you are married with grandchildren and you still expect him at his age to be chewing teargas on the streets against policies that you voted for," the MP said.

According to Amisi, Raila has done so much to create a democratic space in Kenya and it is upon the leaders of the current generation to take up the mantle by themselves, rather than waiting to be given as inheritance.

"He has created an environment for new leaders with charisma, energy and enthusiasm to take over. You know political power is never inherited in any democracy, you have to grab it. To the Kenyan youth it is time to Know that every generation has risen up and done what needed to be done, it is a time we are now being called upon as a generation to rise up and do what needs to be done," said the legislator.

Raila, Ruto handshake speculations

Speaking in reference to the recent commitment to a dialogue between Raila and Ruto through a five-each team representing them, Amisi said he would not mind if the Opposition leader settles for any offer that will come his way.

The MP argued that the Kenyans had over years been thankless about sacrifices made by Raila and they should be left to learn on their own.

"If you are offered something for yourself, bwana 'tafuna kabisa' (chew it) without mercy. You have done your best to people who are thankless. Allow them to either suffer or learn to elect proper leaders," Amisi expounded.

Over the weekend, Ruto and Raila reportedly met in Mombasa and agreed to resolve issues causing a rift through dialogue, with the Opposition wanting former Nigeria president Olusegun Obasanjo to oversee the mediation process.
