Voi, Taita Taveta county - Voi Boys High School students totalling ten were sent home on Monday, July 31, after allegedly going for an extra share of bread.

To be allowed back, the students were asked to carry with them a bundle of wheat flour and a 10-litre container of cooking oil each.

Voi school on the spot over punitive punishment

One parent already honoured the school management's directive; she took her son to the school with the flour and oil.

"My son was sent out on Monday and when I returned with him to school, the deputy principal said that we must pay and that I should also make sure that my son has completed paying the school fees," the parent told Taifa Leo.

The affected parents decried the school's choice of punishment for such a minor mistake.

Many of them expressed their frustration given that they have to dig deep into their pockets to sustain their children in school.

They said the high cost of living is already taking a toll on them, and they also have to struggle to raise the school fees.

"Such punishment of the Voi school does not follow the law. If a student has made a small mistake, he should be punished at school and not expelled from home and ordered to return with flour and oil," Charles Mwadime, a parent, said.

TUKO.co.ke's effort to reach out to the school administration for a comment on the matter proved futile.

The Taita Taveta Education Director Khalif Hirey promised to start a probe into the matter.

He asked the parents to officially file their complaints in his office.

Murang'a school suspends students with hijab

Still on controversial news in the institutions of learning, a school in Murang'a county was on the spot for sending away students donning the hijab.

Seven students were ejected from Thaara Secondary School for covering their heads with the piece of cloth.

According to the parents, trouble started during Idd-ul-Fitr holidays when one of the students sought permission to pray.

A teacher allegedly told the student and seven others to bring their parents to school the following day.

The parents were told the students were allowed to wear hijab, but they should not cover their ears, something they opposed over what they termed as religious discrimination.

The students were sent home the following day after the parents left.

“When the students were admitted to the school, they had hijabs covering their heads as Islam dictates. We find it unfair and religious discrimination when they are given conditions which are not given to other students who are members of the Akorino sect and others,” said Fatuma Ibrahim, one of the parents.

Another parent, Ramadhan Waweru, said the school management had insisted on not covering the ears to prevent them from hiding bhang and other substances in their heads.
