Uhuru Kenyatta's Son Sues Gov't After Revocation Of His Gun License

• Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta's son Jomo Kenyatta Junior has moved to court to complain against the government
• The government was to revoke Jomo's permit with which he owns his firearms; his father confirmed he owns three firearms
• In his argument, Uhuru's son said the government would be acting in violation of his constitutional rights given the due process he observed while seeking the guns licences

Nairobi - Uhuru Kenyatta's eldest child has instituted legal proceedings against the state following the revocation of his gun licence.

John Jomo Kenyatta filed a case at the High Court seeking to have the government compelled to rescind its move to withdraw his gun licence.

Jomo: My firearms legally acquired

According to him, he followed the whole due process before securing his licence(s).

He now seeks to have the Chief Licensing officer, the Licensing Board and the Attorney General barred from taking his firearms permit.

Representing Jomo in court is Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia.

Officers from the state raided Jomo's residence in Karen, Nairobi, on Friday, July 21, looking for a supposed cache of weapons stored therein.

The officers demanded his firearms but could not state which they wanted them; his father would later confirm he owned three firearms.

"On inquiry as to the reasons, if any, that had caused an abrupt demand for my firearms, the offices feigned ignorance. The grounds upon which a firearm license can be revoked are provided in section 5(7) of the Firearms Act, which when ,read with section 7 (2) (a) (v) of the fair administrative action act, cannot be invoked without being allowed to be heard," Jomo said.

Jomo said his rights would be flouted should the court throw out his case.

Government's order to Uhuru's family

The retired president's family was recently ordered to surrender all guns by Monday, July 24.

Uhuru's brother, sons and their four other close associates were ordered to surrender the guns registered in their names to the chief licensing officer.

Speaking to the press, the family lawyer said the former first family was ready to oblige to the directive and was open to understanding why it was issued.

"According to the chief licensing officer, there are firearms that are possessed by the family and that they need to be surrendered. We are happy to meet the chief licensing officer on Monday morning to understand the request and to also understand how we can facilitate the process," he told the media.
