A video of the offenders precariously hanging on a classy, punching their hands in the air as they drove caused an uproar across social media.

The video went viral after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen shared it and told the owner that law enforcement officers would go after the individuals driving the car when the video was captured.

After their arrest, they were presented before Chief Magistrate Martha Nanzushi, where they accepted the offences against them.

The prosecution charged them with a traffic offence of riding in a dangerous position, contrary to Section 61(4) of the Traffic Act.

Mombasa Road accident risk

The particulars of the offence were that, on April 20, 24 at 3 p.m., along Mombasa Road within Nairobi county, being passengers of motor vehicle registration number KCX 959B, Mercedes Benz, rode dangerously by sitting on the door of the said motor vehicle.

Nazushi directed that a pre-sentencing report be prepared and presented before she sentences the accused to their own plea of guilty.

Another suspect, Loise Apata, who was driving the vehicle, is still at large, and police officers are looking for her.

The two will remain in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station pending their sentencing.

Murkomen's threat came true after police officers pursued the suspects and arraigned them.

The CS said that the suspects will serve as an example to many Kenyans with intentions to flout traffic regulations and endanger their lives and those of others.

Kenyans have criticised Murkomen for the increase in road traffic accidents. He reminded motorists that safety begins with them and all other road users, not necessarily the CS.
