Defense Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale has expressed his confidence in the peacekeeping mission in Haiti by the Kenyan police.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, May 29, Duale said Kenyan police will send a special unit to Haiti.

He said Kenya has conducted successful peacekeeping missions in Somalia, Kosovo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"We are going to Haiti; within the police, we have special teams that can deal with different scenarios. We have the General Service Unit (GSU), Public Protection Unit (PPU), and other highly trained officers doing a great job within our borders. It is not the normal police on the streets of Nairobi," Duale explained.

When questioned about the nature of the dreaded gangs in Haiti, he said Kenyans should exercise patience and see what the Kenyan police can do.

"I don't understand why you cannot wait and see how Haiti will be when we land. We have men and women who can bring peace and security not only to our country but to where they are called upon."

Why Duale is confident in the Haiti Peace mission

According to him, Haiti is more like an African nation, and Kenyan police officers were already familiar with the environment.

"Kenya has a very long history of stabilizing and bringing peace to war-torn nations. Haiti is like an African nation. Because of our reputation, standing, and capacity, the international community has asked us to lead the multinational team to stabilize Haiti," Duale said.

With the US defence department reinforcing the Kenyan team, Duale said the women and children in Haiti would return to their everyday life.

"The US Department of Defense will provide logistics, communication center intelligence sharing, and gathering. We are not walking in a dark room; we know what we are doing," Duale added.

Why police deployment in Haiti was delayed

On Monday, May 27, Kenya security personnel who had gone to assess the situation in Haiti were to return to the country due to logistical issues.

A senior officer had disclosed that the bases where the officers were to operate from were not fully constructed.

President William Ruto announced the postponement, citing the need for sufficient preparation before the officers embark on the mission.
