President William Ruto has joined Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale in expressing confidence in the Kenya Police peacekeeping mission to Haiti.

Ruto expressed his confidence after receiving an assessment report from the team sent to assess Haiti's situation.

"I have received a comprehensive brief from the team that undertook an assessment mission to ascertain the state of preparedness for the deployment of our officers," Ruto stated.

Why is Ruto confident?

Kenya was elected by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to lead the multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) to Haiti.

Ruto said he is confident in fulfilling the mission of the UNSC Resolution 2699 of 2023 of Kenya sending her police to the gang-terrorized country.

"I am confident of fulfilling the mandate of UNSC Resolution 2699 (2023)," Ruto said.

Duale on Haiti peacekeeping mission

CS Duale said on Wednesday, May 29, that the UNSC settled for Kenya because of the country's reputation and capacity for successfully conducting peace missions in Africa.

He further said the special units within the police can stabilize the gangs in Haiti when called upon.

He asked Kenyans to exercise patience and wait until the police land in Haiti to start working in the area.

He said the Kenyan security team would receive support from the US Defense Department during the mission to ensure success.

Duale said the American Defense Department would provide the officers with a communication centre, intelligence, sharing and gathering, and provide other logistics.

Why was the mission postponed?

President William Ruto had earlier postponed the deployment as he said they needed enough time for preparation before police embarked on the mission.

The assessment team that was sent said the camps that were to be used by Kenyan Police officers were not yet ready.
