A mother in Homa Bay county has been left in joy after her children decided to participate in the tree-planting day just in her honour.

Kenyans from different parts of the country participated in the tree-planting day holiday on Friday, May 10, after the government set aside the day as part of its agenda to increase vegetation cover and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Homa Bay siblings also decided to use the holiday to honour their mum, who lost her sight 10 years ago.

While speaking to TUKO.co.ke, they said they hope the trees will solve some of their financial struggles.

Homa Bay family pleads for help

They exuded hope that this would help them stay afloat, as they have been undergoing financial troubles due to their mum's condition.

"If we get someone who can buy these trees from us it will help us a family. We live a life of poverty, and sometimes I have to seek help from my own mother to help us till the land for some money, while other times, I have to beg for fees," Quinter Akoth, the children's mum, said.

The family also appealed to well-wishers to help them with clearing fees as schools reopen for the second term on Monday, May 13.

"We would also want to acquire a bigger piece of land where we can plant trees," she added.

The Grade One student at Lelboinet Primary School in Siongiroi was among the enthusiastic participants in the recent re-afforestation efforts of Chepalungu Forest.

Tabitha's photos were shared online by Ravine News, capturing the hearts of Kenyans nationwide.
