Kenyans using prepaid electricity should purchase enough tokens before Sunday, June 2.

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) announced a prepaid system interruption scheduled between Sunday and Monday.

Why KPLC token system will shut down

In a public notice on Monday, May 27, KPLC said the scheduled interruption will occur from Sunday, June 2, at 10pm to Monday, June 3, at 10pm.

The company explained that the interruption was meant for the system upgrade to offer customers better services.

"We wish to inform our customers that the prepaid token vending system will be unavailable from 10:00 PM, Sunday, June 2 to 10:00 PM, Monday, June 3 to enable us to upgrade our systems for improved service delivery," said KPLC.

The utility firm noted that token purchases through vending points, including Kenya Power offices, M-PESA Paybill number 888880, Airtel Money, and banking channels, will be affected.

Kenya Power called for customer understanding and cooperation, urging them to buy enough tokens in advance.

"We therefore wish to advise our pre-paid customers to buy enough tokens before then to avoid any inconvenience," the company added.

This comes as the electricity distributor continues to phase out postpaid electricity services.

KPLC plans postpaid system migration

In January 2024, KPLC announced plans to migrate postpaid customers in rural areas to the prepaid system.

KPLC noted the process will take three years and is aimed at lowering power theft and metre reading costs.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, KPLC noted that the transition process is seamless and will cost customers about KSh 7,500.

However, before applying for the token metres, customers must have their balances cleared on the postpaid metres.
