Kenya Railways had decided to suspend committer services as a precautionary measure after reports of heavy floods in numerous parts of the country.

Kenya Railways zones affected by floods

After assessing the parts of Nairobi affected by the floods, Kenya Railways released a public notice informing Kenyans that it would occasionally suspend train services in the affected parts.

"The flood waters have found their way on to the railway network affecting our operations in Dandora-Mwiki, Thika-Mitubiri, Sagana-Murang'a, Turbo, Naivasha sections.
As a result, we may on occasion suspend trains in areas we consider risky. In line with this, the Ruiru, Limuru Commuter trains and the Nairobi Terminus to Ngong Commuter train, Kisumu Safari train as well as the Nanyuki Safari train, have been suspended due to the above mentioned reasons," said Kenya Railways in a public notice.

Which Kenya Railways routes have resumed services

The railway services operator announced that due to lower safety risks, the following commuter trains have resumed services and will operate according to the regular schedule:

  • Lukenya
  • Syokimau
  • Embakasi Village
  • Link train to Nairobi Terminus

Is SGR affected by floods?

Despite the challenges posed by floods, the Madaraka Express Passenger Service operating on the standard gauge railway line (SGR) between Nairobi and Mombasa remains unaffected and continues to operate according to its regular schedule.

During construction, the SGR was elevated several feet above the ground level, which prevents flood water from submerging the rail line.
