A Kenyan man working in Canada has warned those seeking jobs in the country to be wary of agents promising they have jobs for them.

In a TikTok video, Steve Safari explained that agents outside Canada lack the capacity to provide jobs to people seeking to work there.

"This is something that I have said more than a million times. No person or anyone calling themselves an agent can get a job for you here. You will never find someone, whether in Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania, just waiting to get you a job (in Canada). They ask for money whereas you shouldn't pay any money. So be warned because anyone calling themselves an agent should not lie to you," said Safari.

How to get a job in Canada

The TikToker, who shares insights on working abroad, particularly in Canada, explained that only certified companies in Canada can hire workers from outside.

He noted that the most common way to hire workers from outside Canada is through the government of Canada's Job Bank, which has a section for jobs available for foreigners.

"The only one who can give you a job in Canada is a company certified by the LMIA.
After the applications on Job Bank, the company will send you an invitation for you to do an interview. Once you are done with the interview process, you are shortlisted... If you pass, they give you an offer letter. The offer letter comes with the LMIA document with the company name on it. You got the job. You go and make VISA applications wherever you are. It is all about the interview. That is what many people don't know," Safari said in a TikTok video.

What is the LMIA certificate for jobs in Canada?

As stated by Safari, companies that need to hire foreign workers need to have the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) certification.

According to IIRC, the LMIA certification is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker.

A positive LMIA will show that a foreign worker is needed to fill the position and that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job.

Kenyans warned against paying fraudulent agents

Safari warned Kenyans not to be lied to by fraudulent agents who ask for money in exchange for jobs in Canada.

He warned that even if you are connected directly to an employer and did not apply through the Job Bank website, you should not pay to get the job.

"If you have paid someone who has promised to secure you a job in Canada, just know you have been conned... So don't pay anyone any money because they will not take you anywhere and you will lose your money," Safari warned.

How much foreign workers earn in Canada

In other related stories, a Kenyan woman shared insights into the salaries of skilled and unskilled workers in Canada via TikTok.

The podcast, @kwendamajuupodcast, discussed the question of whether one could make more money in Canada compared to Kenya.

According to the podcast guest, both skilled and unskilled workers in Canada earn higher wages due to the country's developed status.
