He highlighted the desperate situation faced by many families who have sought refuge in public primary schools, secondary schools, and churches.

The businessman also pointed out that the floods had swept away some schools, bridges, and roads.

"Please consider the postponement of schools reopening until the situation is back to normalcy," read part of the letter.

Agufa pained by the floods' destruction

Agufa called upon people of goodwill, the government, and NGOs to assist the affected families during this difficult time.

He emphasized the need for support, considering the destruction witnessed in different parts of the country.

When contacted for comments, Agufa told TUKO.co.ke that he was devastated by the heartbreaking stories he had seen on TV.

"It pains to see images of people searching for their loved ones swept away by the floods, and the destruction of homes, businesses, and classrooms," he said.

Victims need time to prepare for school

Agufa hopes the government will give affected communities more time to prepare and recover before schools can safely reopen.

His request comes at a crucial time, as many parts of the country are grappling with the floods' aftermath.

The Ministry of Education has yet to respond to Agufa's letter, but his plea resonates with many who are concerned about flood victims' welfare.

The flooding situation in Kenya

  • As of April 25, floods had killed at least 35 people and destroyed unquantifiable amounts of property in most parts of the country.
  • Mathare-based activist Benna Buluma is among 10 people who have died in Mathare floodwaters following heavy rains.
  • In addition to the deaths, the flooding in parts of Homa Bay county has displaced at least 690 households.
  • Despite the devastation already experienced, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned Kenyans to brace for more rains.
