Kirinyaga - One person has been confirmed dead following a road accident in the Mugaya area along the Kagumo-Mutito Road.

In the Friday, May 10 evening incident, a beer-ferrying lorry reportedly overturned, crushing a saloon car and killing its occupant.

According to Citizen Digital, the lorry was heading to Kagumo when it overturned while the driver attempted to manoeuvre past potholes on the road.

Emergency response teams and firefighters had a torrid time as they tried to retrieve the deceased's body that was trapped in the mangled car's wreck.

The deceased middle-aged man's body was taken to Kerugoya Mortuary pending identification as both vehicles were towed to Kerugoya Police Station.

Who is to blame for Kirinyaga accident

Residents called on the government to act on the road, pointing out that the accident could have been averted.

Led by Nominated MCA Bosco Gichangi, the locals said they were waiting on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to respond to their requests.

"The lorry driver was trying to avoid the potholes when the accident happened, worrying that this road is full of potholes and we have written to Kenha and we are still waiting for their responses. The lorry driver was attempting to avoid the potholes when the accident occurred. The road is full of potholes. We have submitted a letter to KeNHA on the same and we are awaiting their response," said Gichangi.

2 killed in Kirinyaga road crash

Earlier, two pillion passengers perished a few days back after the motorcycle they had boarded crashed with a tuk-tuk in Kirinyaga.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 15, when a boda boda rider travelling from Samson Corner to Kutus collided with a tuk-tuk on a bustling highway.

The rider was transporting two passengers, a man and a woman when the collision occurred.

Gichugu Sub-county Police Commander Johnson Wachira confirmed the unfortunate event, stating that the tuk-tuk's tyre burst, causing a collision with the motorcycle before it swerved off the road.
