However, he outlined a list of uncertainties in the mission.

First, Cheruiyot emphasised the danger he faced by planning to climb the mountain and outlined his preparations to mitigate the risk.

He mentioned that he knew that only 3% of successful Everest Summits are without Oxygen, meaning that almost 97% of people who attempted to climb the mountain without oxygen perished.

The banker also highlighted that his body had a fair share of physical strain and might not be fully prepared for the task he was about to put it through.

In his defence, he said that he had prepared certain measures in case his body got weary.

"Physically, my body has had its share of battering and although it may not like me anymore, it's ready for this. On the other risks, I'm taking the following measures," he said.

Another uncertainty was that he was prone to HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) as he had experienced it twice during his mountain climbing escapades.

"This attempt therefore looks a lot like a shot in the dark, but we know where the darkness is, and our shot is aimed in there. So as I send my body and spirit up there, I'll sit with the rest of you and wait in anticipation for the outcome."

Despite acknowledging various uncertainties, he expressed that they added to the thrill of his endeavor.

The banker also noted that if he successfully reached the summit, he would face bankruptcy upon returning to Kenya, having invested significantly in his preparations to climb the mountain.

Cheruiyot's sad ending

Rescuer guides deployed by his host expedition company found his body hours after he was reported missing.

Kirui was in the company of a sherpa, with whom they lost radio communication with the host expedition company.

A 48-year-old Romanian climber, on the same trail who was also scaling without supplemental oxygen, was found dead earlier inside his tent.
