Lenka Poláčková, a Slovak actress, television presenter, and ultra trail runner, has achieved a milestone, becoming the first Slovak woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen.

The announcement of her achievement was made on Thursday, May 23, the same day Cheruiyot Kirui and a Nepali climber named Babu Bastakoti were declared dead.

This achievement is a testament to her hard work and resilience in her quest to conquer the tallest mountain in the world.

Who is Poláčková?

Poláčková had already gained recognition in the ultratrail-running community before conquering Mount Everest.

According to hashtag zoznam, a slovack media outlet, she has accomplished demanding races, such as running through Slovakia, the Pyrenees, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and traversing 2000 kilometers throughout the Alps.

One of her notable achievements in running includes her participation in the Prague Hundred, where she secured first place in 2017 and came in second a year later. During the latter event, she also completed a 500km route from Košice to Bratislava.

As previously noted, in May, Lenka achieved another significant milestone in her career.

Accompanied by an experienced team and her husband, she successfully ascended Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

Notably, she became the first Slovak woman to accomplish this feat without the assistance of supplemental oxygen.

Her achievement occurred just nine days after the ascent of Lucia Janičová, the first Slovak woman to reach Mount Everest. However, Lenka's accomplishment surpassed Lucia's, as she completed the expedition without relying on oxygen support.

Banker Cheruiyot Kirui passes on

However, many lives, including Cheruiyot's, have been lost in the quest to conquer Mount Everest.

The banker attached to the Kenya Commercial Bank had disappeared after scaling 8,000 metres above the world's highest mountain.

Rescuer guides deployed by his host expedition company found his body hours after he was reported missing.

Nepali climber founder dead

Other than Kirui, another mountaineer died at Mt. Everest, the organisers of the climbing expedition announced.

On Thursday, May 23, the organisers said a Nepali climber died above Camp IV on Wednesday as he suffered from altitude sickness.
